Frequently Asked Questions
Below is a list of questions and answers which may help in making a decision.
What are the components of iLIVE?
- iLIVE includes information about nutrition such as portions, food choices and calories. The program also includes exercise and physical activity and strategies for achieving lifestyle practices that more closely align with national guidelines.
What does it mean that iLIVE is a research study?
- iLIVE is a voluntary research study supported by the National Cancer Institute (National Clinical Trial 06011499). Results will be used to develop new programs for cancer survivors that may be offered to them by their healthcare team.
- iLIVE is a new study based on previous successful research in cancer survivors, particularly two previous studies about diet and exercise.
If I chose to participate, what does it mean for me that I’m a research study participant?
- As a research study participant, you will be randomly assigned to one of two groups that determine the way in which you receive online diet and exercise information. This randomization allows researchers to identify the most effective way to deliver these programs to all cancer survivors.
- You will receive a Fitbit, an Aria scale and access to online instruction regardless of your group assignment.
Do I need to get my doctor’s permission to participate?
- While you don’t need to get a doctor’s referral, we will ask your medical oncologist to determine whether or not it is safe for you to participate in moderate intensity exercise. We also encourage you to share your participation with other members of your healthcare team so they are aware.
Can I participate if I’m finishing treatment?
- We require that participants are finished with surgery, radiation therapy, or chemotherapy at least 3 months before they join. Still, you can enroll and prepare to start if you will be completing treatments soon.
- If you are taking hormone-blocking medication , you can still participate in iLIVE.
How much time do I need to commit to this program? Can I participate whenever I want?
- Both study groups will receive an online program for 6 months. However, one group will receive a program that is completely self-paced, whereas the other group will be asked to participate in three weekly online exercise classes of an hour each that are held at convenient times (i.e., morning and/or early evening).
Do I need any specific technology (computer, phone, tablet) or experience with technology?
- You will need internet access (if you have a barrier to high-speed internet, we have options to help!), email access or willingness to set up an email.
Is there any cost to me?
- No! This program is entirely free and is funded by the National Cancer Institute. In addition, the items you receive (digital scale and a Fitbit) are yours to keep.
- The iLIVE program is also budget-friendly, and we have modules to help you eat healthy without high grocery costs.
- There is no gym membership, exercise equipment or special kitchen equipment required to participate.
I’m mostly sedentary, do I qualify for this program?
- Yes! We work with all levels of function so no baseline fitness is required. You can get started from the comfort of your home doing movement that is personalized to your level.
